Can I go swimming with a spray tan?

Yes, you can go swimming with a spray tan--it is NOT all going to wash off in one dip...but it may not last as many days. Swimming in a pool for extended periods of time will fade your spray tan. Most pools use chlorine to keep the pool water fresh and germ free. While we love germ free, chlorine is bleach and can be harsh on your skin and fade your spray tan. If you go swimming, keep your dips short and rinse off with fresh water when you get out of the pool. Salt water is better than chlorine in pool water, but it will still fade a sunless tan if you are in the water for extended periods of time. So, if you are heading to the ocean and you know that you want to scuba dive or snorkel, plan for those activities to happen later into your vacation and not the first days that you are there. This way your spray tan has faded a bit and your natural suntan has taken over so that the water isn’t going to affect it as much. And remember: a hot tub is like the kiss of death to a spray tan. Soaking in hot bubbling chlorinated water? No thanks, not on your tan please. This is one of the ways that we recommend to remove your spray tan.

Keep these tips in mind to help your color last when on vacation:

  • Short dips in the water to cool off work great, but hanging out in the water all day will fade your color faster.
  • Thoroughly shower off any chlorine, salt, or sand residue after swimming.
  • A heavy layer of sunscreen lotion helps to keep the water off your skin which helps to protect your spray tan color and keep your skin moisturized.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color depth should I choose?

It's best to start with a MEDIUM color depth; This is usually the most natural-looking tan for your skin type.

The darker you choose to tan, the longer your tan will last, but the more maintenance it requires as you fade out. If you choose a DARK or BRONZED PLUS color depth, we recommend you purchase a Touch-Up Spray so that you can touch-up areas that fade out first.

Should I try a trial tan before my special event?

Yes, we recommend you make an appointment at least 2 weeks before your special event if you have never had a spray tan before. This is why we offer a New Customer Package, so that you can have one test tan. The hardest decision is choosing the color depth appropriate for your skin type and event. We can spray everyone with the same solution, and everyone will turn a different color, because everyone is starting at a different natural skin level and everyone's natural pigment will pull a different tone. We strive for customer satisfaction, and it is important that you provide us with honest feedback the day after your tan, so that we can make adjustments to customize your spray tan for your individual skin and we can also make important suggestions for your next spray appointment.

When should I schedule a spray tan appointment?

A spray tan is in it's fullest bloom 48 hours after application. Keep in mind that it take 12 hours for your skin to completely finish developing, so it is NOT a good idea to get a spray tan the day of your event. Ideally, you should make your appointment time a day or two before your event. For example: if you have a Saturday wedding, make all your manicure, pedicure, wax or threading appointments for Wednesday or Thursday first, then make your spray tan appointment for Thursday evening. If you are going on a vacation, we do NOT recommend you travel while wearing tan solution. Make your spray tan appointment at least 12 hours before you begin your vacation travel.

Can I spray tan while pregnant?

Yes! We spray pregnant women on a regular basis, and we offer an organic solution option. However it is important to talk to your physician and get approval first. All women are different, check with your doctor to make sure that you can get a spray tan. Some pregnant women have special needs or suddenly develop sensitive skin, and only your doctor can tell you for sure if self-tanning products are specifically safe for you.

Is it safe to tan while breast-feeding?

Tanning is completely compatible with breastfeeding and will not alter the milk whatsoever. There is no record of any dangers to the breastfed baby in relation to spray tanning. However, you must shower off tanning solution before feeding your baby, or the baby will be tanned as well. We recommend the Quick Rinse solution which develops in 1-4 hours. Also you should use nipple covers or choose NOT to spray your chest area.

Will I turn orange?

Absolutely not!

  • One cause of orange tones is acidic skin. We avoid orange distortions by always spraying every clients with our pH balancing Prep Spray.
Keeping your skin at the proper pH level is important in order to obtain natural tones.
  • Another cause of brassy tones is trying to go too dark for your skin type. Oversaturation of solution on the skin can result in a possible orange distortion.
We strive to achieve the most natural-looking golden or bronzed tan for your skin level. The darker you tan naturally, the darker you can tan with sunless tanning.
We do NOT suggest you choose an un-natural looking color depth for your skin type.
    - If this is your first time sunless tanning, we recommend a MEDIUM (or light if you prefer) color depth which is the most natural-looking color level for your skin. Then the next time you come in for a bronzing treatment, you will know whether you want to try a darker color.
-For those who have experimented with sunless tanning before and are looking for a darker than dark color depth, we do offer a Bronzed Plus. Our Bronzed Plus Solution has a violet toner that counteracts orange tones, leaving an exotic deep dark bronze tan.
*Please consult your spray tan technician to determine the most appropriate color depth for your skin type and for your event. Note that depending on your natural skin level, it may take 2 sessions to reach your desired color.

  • You may find you are fighting brassy tones when trying to tan too quickly for your skin type. When choosing a DARK color depth, sometimes it is best to use a solution with a longer development time. Using a 12-Hour solution option gives the violet toner more time to neutralize brassy tones.
  • The products used to prep and maintain your spray tan are crucial as well. Never use bar soap before or during the life of your spray tan. The pH of bar soap is too alkaline and can cause tans to get brassy, bar soap leaves residue on the skin, and it causes spray tans to deteriorate more quickly and unevenly. Always use a pH balanced bodywash and moisturizer.
*Ask your spray tan technician about recommended prep and maintenance products for your spray tan.

How long will my sunless spray tan last?

  • Sunless solution only tans the superficial layer of skin and does NOT penetrate into deeper skin layers. On average, the outermost layer of skin sheds naturally in several days, expect your spray tan to last about 7-10 days with proper care. Your spray tan gradually fades as natural exfoliation occurs. Obviously everyone’s body chemistry and lifestyle is different.
  • Medications, pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, skin disorders, or skin porosity can affect the color and longevity of your spray tan.
  • Excessive sweating, frequent bathing, hot tubs, salt water and chlorine will shorten the life expectancy of your spray tan.
  • Do NOT use bar soap, a loofah, an exfoliator, or acne products on your sunless tan. Cleanse using only your hands with a pH balanced bodywash.
  • Not staying properly moisturized will cause skin to fade faster or may cause uneven fading. Allowing your skin to become overly dry can cause your tan to look scaled or crackled.
We recommend that you apply moisturizer at least twice a day to help your tan to last longer and to fade more evenly.
  • Ask your spray tan technician for products and additional tips on how to ideally maintain and extend your bronzed color.

How long does the solution have to stay on my skin before I can get wet?

You must avoid water during the entire time the solution is developing on your skin! Keep in mind that perspiration and saliva are water too. While the solution is processing on your skin, you can NOT do things like wash your hands, lick your lips, work-out and sweat. Water stops the activation process and you will develop lighter in the areas that get wet. If it is raining the day of your appointment, please bring an umbrella or dress appropriately to avoid the rain. Also, plan your day to shower according to recommended development times.
We offer 2 solution options: 8-12 Hour Premium Solution or 1-4 Hour Quick Rinse Solution.

  • Recommended development time for the Premium Solution is 8-12 hours. If you are sprayed with the Premium Solution in the evening, you will have to sleep in the solution and wait to shower until the morning. In this case, it is not necessary to disrupt your sleep and shower at exactly 12 hours. Leaving the cosmetic bronzer on longer than 12 hours will not make you darker, because the solution will stop developing after 12 hours. However we do NOT recommend you leave the Premium Solution on longer than you have to, because your body’s natural oils and perspiration may cause your tan to become blotchy.
  • Recommended development time for the Quick Rinse Solution is 1-4 hours depending on your desired color depth.
For a LIGHT color, giving your skin a sun-kissed glow, shower in 1-2 hours.
For a MEDIUM color, giving your skin a natural golden tan, shower in 2-3 hours.
For a DARK color, giving your skin a bronzed vacation tan, shower in 3-4 hours.
    * The Quick Rinse Solution MUST be rinsed at the proper development time. Do NOT leave Quick Rinse Solution on the skin longer than 4 hours. Leaving Quick Rinse on longer than 4 hours may cause oversaturation and blotchy or orangey results. Note that although Quick Rinse contains a higher DHA percentage, it does NOT immediately tan your skin; This solution just allows you to shower sooner. After your initial rinsing of the cosmetic bronzer, your tan will NOT be immediately noticeable. In fact, when you first shower, it will appear as if you have washed away your tan. Do NOT panic---your color depth will gradually continue to darken for 12 hours after application. Do NOT judge your color depth until the tan has had time to completely finish developing.

What should I wear for my spray tan session?

  • You may wear whatever you feel most comfortable wearing for your airbrush session keeping in mind that whatever you do wear you will receive tan lines from. Once a tan line is created, it cannot be easily removed until it fades away. Be sure your tan lines will not show when wearing your special event clothing. Some people wear bathing suits (be sure dangling strings are tucked away). Some wear briefs or thongs, strapless bras or pasties (nipple petals). If you are sprayed wearing lacey undergarments, your tan will develop with the pattern created by the lace. If you do not want any tan lines, you have the option to be sprayed nude. The nude option is nice when you are going on vacation and are planning to wear different swimsuits.
  • After your session, while the solution is processing on your skin, we recommend you wear dark, loose-fitting clothing (preferably a long-sleeved shirt & long pants made of cotton or a thin flannel) and flip flops. Avoid anything too tight such as a bra, jeans, socks or shoes. Wearing anything too tight while your tan is processing may cause tan to blemish. Also, long sleeves and long pants will protect your tan from accidental splashes, and will protect tan solution from rubbing off skin and onto furniture or bedding. The tanning solution may stain nylon, silk, wool and leather. We are not responsible for stained material from tanning solution.

What should I do before my sunless spray tan?

  • If you are planning on receiving a manicure, pedicure, wax or threading, these services will remove your spray tan and should be done PRIOR to your spray tan session—NOT afterward.
  • On the day of your spray tan application, be sure to shower, shave and exfoliate. We do NOT recommend you use bar soap, or a sugar, salt, or oil scrub, because they tend to leave a residue on the skin and may cause uneven color absorption. It is sufficient to use a sponge or washcloth and an oil-free body wash to exfoliate with. Pay extra attention to scrub the dead skin from neck, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles and toes. Scrub all oils off of chest. Scrub all deodorant residue off armpits. If you have long hair, wash and condition your hair first before exfoliating, so that conditioner doesn't run down your body a leave a residue on your skin.
  • After your shower, do NOT apply any lotion, deodorant, make-up, or perfume. It is best NOT to have any barrier on your skin prior to your spray tan application. Don't worry if your skin feels dry.  Prep Spray is used as the first step in our spray application process to balance your skin's pH and porosity. Plus, after tanning solution is applied, we will further hydrate your skin and seal your tan with HydroFirmSpray.
